    Speakers & Hardware

Post  Dio on Mon Aug 24, 2009 9:45 am

Recently my computer's speakers have been dieing, i've no idea if it's a software or hardware fault but they really can't make a din like they used to be able to. Thought i'ld leave a thread open since I know mcmicken is a sound engineer for starters.

Currently my setup is 1 subwoofer and two smaller speakers, they're suffering from volume fluctuations, crackliness at louder volumes (Even with good audio files).

Do folks think it's worth getting surround sound by the way? I mean I can see the advantages for when your gaming and such but I can only assume it'ld just make things louder overall...

I'll address the points as I can. The first one I'll go for is the surround sound idea.

Judging by where your computer is in the room, it's probably not worth it for gaming. It's not just a case of sticking the speakers around the room, you have to measure the distance between them or else it'll sound imbalanced and you'll suffer from mild phase problems.

Crackling problems are usually down to wires wearing, usually just over time if you've kept them in better nick than I do :P Could also just be because your speakers can't handle the volume. If memory serves they aint too big speakers so it makes sense that they struggle when pushed at high volumes over and over.

Don't understand why. I've never heard you put them on that loud. I crank mine on a regular basis when I'm mixing and just if I have the house free and mine seem to hold up pretty well.

I like to listen to things really loud when nobody is around.
Basically between like 1 and 4 on weekdays when nobody is around here.
