    McMicken's Stupid Little Game Thread

    Post  mcmicken on Tue Sep 22, 2009 12:06 pm

    EDIT: Basically a place to talk about games like Harvest Moon, Rune Factory, Animal Crossing...maybe even the Sims despite how much I hate it. Decided to change my Animal Crossing thread because the main games I play and get into are these stupid wee things with like no plot.

    ANIMAL CROSSING

    Anyone a fan of these games? Because I'm having a huge weekend off I've been playing mine for the DS. Just paid off my first mortgage (120,000 bells no less) to that arsehole Tom Nook. Can't wait for my new house tomorrow Very Happy

    Oh yeah, I'll basically be updating y'all on my sad little life on it so be warned.

    Since Tom Nook's place is closed today I've not been able to keep up my trading so I thought I'd do some good and donate some pieces to the Museum. Blathers was rather pleased with the stuff I gave him so I felt a bit better about myself. I then set about giving people furniture that they were after which I was paid rather well for Very Happy At 12pm I'd invited Elmer to come over and see my new house. Can't decide whether Elmer's male or female but I always saw it as a her...anyway, she was pleased I invited her to my place and rated it 3/5 stars. Not bad considering I'd only had it for an hour :)

    It's more a reluctance to do anything else productive. I've done other things today but I'm finding myself getting captivated by my little town and it's people.

    So started playing Rune Factory a couple of days ago. Basically it's Harvest Moon with a bit of plot (amnesiac dude shows up in town, is given a plot of land to work on, attempts to woo ladies and goes into caves to do some adventurin'). But with the added benefit of actually being able to walk over crops so you don't have to put them in those 8 formations below.

    ...
    ...
    . .

    Pity I didn't realise this until I'd planted most of them in those formations...should've read the manual...

    I don't know what it is but I always find myself getting addicted to these stupid little games more than real or good games. I think I was destined to be a farmer (but then again I'll slag anyone off who plays Farmville on Facebook). I think any game that lets me fish seems to rank well on my scale.

    So I lost the egg contest...that wank Neumann obviously sold me some of his shite eggs and kept the good ones for himself. What a cunt. I'll get him back though...he'll be lucky to have kneecaps by the end of the week.

    I'd love it if it went the other way round...the Don suddenly gives you a shady job to do.

    On a farm.

    Have to take out a cow and dispose of the body without anyone noticing.

    Next on my list of games to play instead of something with a plot (wish I hadn't finished Red Dead :( ) is Crackdown. Awesome fannying about sim. Plot is very dull and the enemies are a piece of piss but running and jumping around the city are great fun. Booting cars off highways is a personal favourite. A virtual playground for 5? Excellent stuff.

    Following in the trend of 'Games you picked up for a 5';

    Got a copy of 'Dark Void' today, the dynamic battles in this are goddamn awesome;
    I mean this game seriously allows you to go from fighting across the ground, to hanging off a ledge and fighing your way vertically up a cliffside to launching off the side of said cliffside to engage in a dogfight with your jetpack before you swoop in on an enemy craft, break it open, beat the driver to death and take his ship for a spin.

    The damage is a bit wonky since sometimes it seems like your a indestructable tank and sometimes (Usually dogfights) your scraping by to survive, and it's one of the few games i'm thankful uses the regenerative health so long as you don't get hit mechanic (Since well I like the high ground, I won't find any medkits up there).

    One of the crowning moments of awesome for me was when I got my first jetpack which only was good for short jumps and I was fighting my way straight up a cliffside; having shot a enemy directly above me for some reason it didn't click that I should dodge the falling body - Naturally I find myself hammering buttons to cling on for dear life within the next second. Which got a cheer from me since the dev's thought of actually going and putting that in.

    The plot is a bit naff, and I have to laugh at the fact the protagonist managed to identify a wrecked battleship from a canyon away from a single glance (I didn't see a big name tag on it personally). The support characters come off as annoying when you do half the work (as expected in a shooter) only to have a cinematic let a npc hog the limelight from you. This has happened atleast 4 times now, additionally I find something about the way they present the love intrest character highly annoying.

    Oh well, it's not like I was playing for the plot anyway.
    FWOOOOSH! ~ ~ ~ ~
