    Tech/Gear Thread

Post  mcmicken on Tue Apr 20, 2010 2:44 pm

EDIT: Just putting all this into a general thread so it's more about the tech side of the podcast rather than the content.

Well I'm looking at upgrading my gear so I'll be able to record more than 2 things at once. Have stumbled across a buggeration though...most things are XP compatable but not with Media Centre Edition and guess what muggins here has?

I was hoping to upgrade my interface first as well as moving to ProTools 8 from Cubase LE4 in the next couple of months then upgrade the laptop to a Macbook Pro later but this has set me back a bit. Need to re-jig my plan or find a way of changing my OP without spending the 60 odd quid to do it properly but without forking up the whole laptop.

Then again I could just buy a mic I was intending to get earlier that uses a figure-8 pattern meaning it can record 2 sources from just 1 mic input. Would be quite useful from my point of view so will probably go along with that one.

Just need to find out how much I'll get paid next Thursday but I'll get my paycheck through before the end of the week with any luck.

Well tbh I want the Macbook Pro for the far superior RAM and Processor speed, not the OS. I intend to start running everything off my Ext Hard-drive an' all.

It's a temporary fix. My internal Hard drive is only 100GB but there's only 30-50GB free at any given time. I know the speed of stuff is dependant on the transfer speed of USB (which I know aint great but it's better than my laptop, trust me). The Macbook I'm looking at will have 250 or 500GB so I'll use my Ext Hard drive to back stuff up as I go along. Something like a raid system I think it's called.

Ordered 2 of my things, got my new interface and ProTools which'll hopefully arrive on Saturday (pity I'm working all weekend :P) but that should help my life go easier. Won't be using it for podcasting since I'll be working on my brother's Macbook for now but at least I can finish up college work anyway.

Expensive hobby though :/ Got paid today (less than I thought I would tbh...need to chase that one up) and already that's 527 gone.

    Scott's Gear Update:

Well there's only one thing of note for this side of things tbh but went shopping online again and have got the mic stated above (the one that can record front and back at the same time (Rode Nt-2A if anyone cares :P)) so interviews over Skype or whatever are made much easier to manage (and easier for me to mix since we'll each have our own individual audio stream instead of me and Dio sharing a mic)

Very seriously thinking about getting the Macbook soonish (ie within the month) too.

Nt2A arrived today. Quite a sexy beast. Did a few demo recordings on acoustic guitar and vocals and it sounds pretty nice. Need to get it running through my better mic pres though, will be stonking Very Happy

Makes me realise how bad the acoustics are in my room. Need to go DIY on it's ass methinks.

    New laptop :)

Slightly better spec than the macbook I was going for, half the price. Badabing, badaboom!

Just need one more cable since the firewire port on this one is different (again :P). But so much closer to my full rig!

So yeah, that last update was basically a lie. It almost worked for like a day then relapsed.

But on the plus side it's working now thanks to an Express card with a TI Chipset :) ProTools is a-go-go. All podcasts from now on will be recorded, mixed and pseudo-mastered in there. You won't hear much difference but I'm just more savvy on it compared to Cubase. Plus this means we can record more than one feed at once, which opens up possibilities for better recorded interviews.

Music-nerd semi has just been raised in salute.
